Spain at 5.50: Lamine Yamal,
StatRank #2, and the Favourite Question
Spain at a glance
The Defending European Champions
Spain won Euro 2024. Before that, they won the Nations League in 2021. The last time Spain failed to reach the knockout stages of a major international tournament was the 2014 World Cup group stage — over a decade ago. This is not a team with a reputation built on history alone. It is a team producing consistent results right now.
StatRank™ rates Spain second globally — 75.7% win rate across 37 matches, 2.73 goals scored per game, 0.86 conceded. The model places only one team above them. The market backs Spain as the outright favourite at 5.50 on Betfair Exchange, implying an 18.2% probability of winning the tournament.
The question is whether that 5.50 is the right price — and what Lamine Yamal's development since Euro 2024 does to that calculation.
Yamal: From 16 to 18, and Better
Lamine Yamal was 16 years old at Euro 2024. He turned 17 the day after the final. He was arguably Spain's best player in the tournament — not their most experienced, not a supporting act, but the player who changed games and created the moments that mattered most.
He is now 18. At Barcelona, he has continued to develop at a rate that very few players in the history of the sport have matched at his age. The combination of technical quality, directness, and big-game performance is rare at any age — at 18, it is extraordinary.
For Spain at the World Cup, Yamal represents something specific: a player in the ascending phase of his career at exactly the moment it matters most. His best football is still ahead of him — but what he is producing right now is already at the level that wins international tournaments.
What the Data Says
75.7% across 37 matches — the highest of any realistic World Cup contender. Only two defeats in that sample.
2.73 per game. Spain don't just defend well — they create consistently and at high volume against quality opposition.
0.86 per game. Solid defensively, though the StatRank™ model places England's 0.57 above this on defensive metrics.
DDWDWWWWWD — four draws in the last ten suggests some inconsistency. The model notes this in its weighting.
Why the Model Has England Above Spain
StatRank™ rates England first and Spain second. The gap is narrow — both are significantly clear of the rest of the field — but the model's reasons are specific.
England's defensive numbers (0.57 conceded per game) are better than Spain's (0.86). England's recent form is stronger (nine wins from ten vs four draws in Spain's last ten). In a recency-weighted model that values clean sheet data heavily, these differences matter.
This does not mean Spain are not worth backing at 5.50. It means the market is correctly identifying Spain as one of the top two teams but may be slightly overweighting the Euro 2024 win relative to the current underlying data. At 5.50, there is a reasonable case. At 4.50, there would not be.
Is 5.50 Worth It?
The StatRank™ model's view: Spain at 5.50 is not the best value in the outright market, but it is not a poor bet. For the defending European champions, rated second globally by the model, with arguably the world's most exciting young player and one of the highest win rates in international football — 18.2% implied probability is a defensible price.
Compare this to Brazil at 9.6 (StatRank #30) or even France at 9.00 (StatRank #6). Spain at 5.50 for StatRank #2 represents significantly better statistical value than those prices. The picks where the model finds the strongest edge are in the longer-odds range — Morocco, Senegal, Japan — but Spain at 5.50 is a price the data does not argue strongly against.
For bettors wanting tournament exposure to a near-certain contender with elite squad depth and an 18-year-old who changes the ceiling of what is possible — Spain at 5.50 is a coherent position. Just not the model's top signal.
